Hyw yearns to join his father in serving the charismatic Llywelyn, Prince of Wales. If only Hyw dared tell anyone of his ability to scout through the eyes of a hawk, it might help secure his place in the royal guard. Cat, his sister, longs to inherit the magical ability that runs through her mother's line. If only she could see her future, now that she is 13 and promised to a boy she barely remembers.
When a messenger summons the prince to a secret meeting, Cat and Hwy find themselves in the middle of a war that threatens to destroy all of Wales. Can they master their special abilities in time to save the royal family-and themselves?
Set among the actual events and personages of late 13th century Wales, Hawk is a fantasy novel that recreates what life might have been like for two teenagers coming of age.

I had worried that this book was going to be one where it was difficult to keep track of the characters considering that it started with a cast list complete with pronunciation. I skimmed this, but I knew it wouldn't be much help to me since I have a hard time flipping back to indexes and glossaries with ebooks on my Kindle. (I love ebooks for convenience, but sometimes physical copies make things easier, but I digress.) Luckily I had nothing to worry about. Powell did a great job giving the characters personalities and identities, so I didn't need to flip back to figure out who was who and who was related to who. The names, though Welsh, were fortunately also not a problem in the slightest. I'm always happy when fantasy is easy to follow!Back to the characters, the author did a wonderful job bringing them to life. The chapters alternated between a pair of siblings and I enjoyed this style, probably because I liked both of the characters and was invested in what was happening to both of them. I tend to like multiple viewpoint stories, anyway, but this was well done. The secondary characters were pretty well-rounded, too, which is likely why I had no trouble keeping track of who was who.
I don't read a lot of historical fiction/fantasy (usually just plain fantasy) and I wasn't disappointed in this approach to magic. It blended well with the historical aspects of the story. I don't want to get into spoilers, but I particularly liked how Hyw (one of the main characters) learned how to work both his animal-related magic and the magic that helped his prince.
The story had a nice pace and with short chapters, it sped along and kept me interested. The only minor issue I can bring up is that the end of the story felt a little rushed. I guess I wanted to know more about what happened with the characters and their magic! The story ending where it did was understandable, though, considering that Powell was working with a specific time/event in history. If there's a sequel, you can bet I'll be reading it. I'll give this four and a half stars (although Amazon seems to only allow full stars, so I'll bump it up rather than down). I'll recommend it to readers who enjoy YA fantasy or historical fiction with a side of fantastical.

Hawk Marie Powell 9781927400937 Books Reviews
When I first heard Marie read a chapter of this as a work in progress, I thought, i can hardly wait to read it when finished. I never doubted its publication. Now that I finished the book, it does not disappoint. This is a spell-binding, riveting YA historical fiction alive with character, conflict and action. Definitely a blow-your-mind debut novel. Loved it!
I really enjoyed this. I didn't know a lot about Welsh history. None actually. But it's quite fascinating, and the author, using the perspective of a brother and sister caught up in the adventure and the tumultuous events of the times, and mixing in elements of fantasy, captured my interest in this period and the Welsh people. The extensive historical notes and glossary was very useful and much appreciated.
The writing was polished and it was a quick read. Well recommended.
Hawk is an engrossing historical fantasy which conjures up the vivid and colorful action of medieval warfare involving knights and kings and queens, near death escapes by commoners as well as royal heirs, and fantastic transformations and supernatural interventions that are the stuff of myths and legends. Its exotic setting in 13th century Wales provides a window into a little known place and and time, but it is so beautifully grounded in the characterization of Hwy and Cat(a brother and sister with special powers) and the perspectives of their family, who are servants to the Welsh royal family, that the strange names and places present no challenge at all. I didn’t find it necessary to use the glossary, but for those who might want to further explore the language and history of the times that glossary as well as a historical note and references could be very helpful. Although Cat and Hwy are clearly medieval characters, their development serves to underscore--especially with Cat--the links between the aspirations and challenges faced by young people today and those faced by young women and men in medieval Wales. Hwy has the special gift of being able to empathize with and enter into the perceptions and feelings of animals and birds--hence the title, Hawk. Cat has the ability to foresee the future in sufficient time to alter potentially tragic events. Together their stories of bravery and loyalty as they use these special gifts to help their leaders fend off the English, who are bent on destroying their country and culture, speak to the role that young people can play today or in any era. We care equally about these two siblings, and the fact that they are separated and in danger for much of the novel leads to an alternation between the experiences of Hwy and Cat that draws the reader eagerly from one chapter to the next. Let’s hope there will be a sequel to this novel as I still want to read more about the adventures of Hwy and Cat!
