“Through the Eyes of My Mulatto Daughter,” takes place in the late 1960's in Selma, Alabama; where an interracial couple, Richard Adams and Marilyn Halston has encountered relentless ridicule, threats, and even beatings by white southern racists - all for the sake of love. The couple escaped that place and time by migrating to the West when they married – for Marilyn this was just the beginning of her tormented future.

Brittney Adams, their daughter and founder of Ebony Eyes, a home for troubled pregnant teens discovers an unspeakable secret her parents had concealed for over thirty years. Brittney’s persistent unraveling of the truth forces the family to come face to face with the demons from their past. Still distressed and afflicted - Brittney is faced with yet another challenge. A new resident, a sixteen year old pregnant teen, Angela, is being stalked by a mysterious man. As Brittney tries desperately to protect her mom and now Angela – a deadly accident takes place in the Adams’ home.

Through The Eyes Of My Mulatto Daughter eBook Michele L. Waters Reviews

This book reads like so many other books with the very predictable story lines. It's an easy reading book, especially for juveniles. I especially like the absence of sex, foul language, and violence, for the most part. Britney, the mulatto daughter does seem to prefer her black heritage much more than her white, which is understandable because of her closeness to her mother and the hatred she experienced from her father's relatives.
This was not not a good read - I persevered only because it was my book club's choice for the month. The flow was uneven and the story line unrealistic. Too many coincidences. The title didn't fit the content. It was a quick read, the kind of book you might pick up in the airport to read while traveling and throw away when the trip is over. I would not recommend it to other readers.
I enjoyed the book such that it kept my interest along with the intriguing notion of what is going to happen next. Great story details, and when Jerome said are you ready for the details, literally. I braced myself for the details coming. This was a very nice and light read, that in my opinion had the happy ending it needed. I cant wait to further discuss with my bookclub about the mulatto daughter and the pain of this bi racial relationship
I give this book 3 1/2 stars, but you can't give 1/2 star. The story was about a Mullato (I find the use of that word a little odd in 2014), but if the author is OK with it, so am I daughter, but so much more. I thought the book was a lot more than a story through her eyes. Other characters in the book had their stories told at times that were not through the daughters' eyes. I enjoyed this book and would recommend to others. Plot line was different but I don't want to give anything away. Story well written, though editing is not what it used to be. I always find mistakes in books that seem to slip through proofreaders or editors. Story had well developed characters, especially Brittney and Jerome. Book could have received 5 stars, but I needed deeper explanation for Brittany's father's behavior towards her mother. Also when Brittany doubted Jerome's love, that part needed to be fleshed out in more detail. I think I understood her Mother's behavior. Can't be specific without including Spoilers. Loved the parts written about her brothers and how she found them and their interactions, especially because their life paths took a rather unexpected turn. Also I appreciated the tie in between her personal life and her work at The Ebony Eyes Residence. Overall a very good book, would give it different name that highlighted Brittany's search for her brothers and would go a little deeper into Brittney's Dad's character. Read the book on and finished it in days.
I read this book in less than a week and I really enjoyed it. It tells about a lady named Brittney who is the product of an interracial couple, her mother is black and her father is white. Her father's family hated her mother because she was black. Her mother was physically and emotionally abused by her father. Her mother and father kept a secret that her mother was forced by her father to give up her twins sons at birth due to the color of their skin. They were darker than Brittany. Brittany mother reveals this to her and Brittany goes on a search to find her biological brothers. Her father was a horrible man and in the end he got shot accidently while trying to shoot her mother. I was glad the story ended this way because her needed to get out of the picture.
I thought it would've had a better conflict and that the main character, being mulatto, would've been more complex but she seemed to come off as a spoiled rich girl with Daddy issues. Maybe if the story touched more on the history of the family and was probably told from the mother's point of view instead since she's seen more of the relationships of the families and the Husband. The daughter's point of view was too much of an outsider to really try to connect with the other characters of the book.
This book held my attention so that I did not want it to end so I had to find another book that Ms. Water's had written because I wanted to experience her writing again. The story was so magnificently constructed and realistic. I felt sadness, anger, happiness and a plethora of other emotions while reading this book. This is a book that should be read by all because it gives another look into the bitter experience of racism and what families go through while casted under it's shadows.
Michele Waters is to be commended for tackling the issues of Racism, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Teen Pregnancy, and just "plain" ole' ignorance in one novel.

While some of the characters were unbelievable, cliche' and "over the top" others were credible and simply "southern and sweet."

The novel started slowly, but the ending was well worth the wait. Near the end, I found myself speaking to Marilyn out loud (a tell-tale sign that I am vested in a novel); particulary in the scenes where Richard was involved.

Although Ms. Waters is creative in her narrative approach, I found myself " speed" reading through the descriptive prose of Jerome's tenure in foster care. As a reader, I realize his anguish and dispair had to be relayed; but more than a page of this torture is a bit excessive.

I enjoyed the real-time beginning and sequential events that led to this explosive climax. It gave the novel the feel of a mystery/thriller.

While I appreciated the epilogue, I would like to have read more about the "new and hopefully improved" Marilyn after she was rescued (yes, I intended to use the word "rescued"), as well as the new family dynamic with the twins and without Richard. Did Marilyn find her voice?..Did Marlyn find happiness? This reader can only HOPE that she did!!
