Book 11 in the Magnificent Devices steampunk series!
“What do you propose, sir?”
He held her astonished gaze as he went down upon one knee. “Why … I propose.
Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, so that I may accompany you to San Francisco de Asis and help you stop this war?”
Gloria Meriwether-Astor, determined to end the invasion her father and a power-hungry diplomat started, has found safety with the witches of the river canyons in the Wild West. But how can one young lady without so much as a hat to her name challenge a kingdom? Confronted with the solution—marriage—she has two choices accept the help she needs, or return to Philadelphia alone and a failure.
So, in the company of riverboat captain Stan Fremont—the dashing rogue she must now call husband—she sets off for the capital to negotiate with the Viceroy. But with an entire country mobilizing between herself and her objective, the attempt could mean her life—and the life of the one person she is beginning to care for …
“She makes hard choices because they’re right, because of principle, because of morality—perhaps even out of a need to change her family and her business’s legacy but Gloria’s is ultimately the most unselfish path and that is unexpected.” —Fangs for the Fantasy, on Fields of Air

I love this series so I hope I am wrong in my assumptions, but I'm afraid I'm going to be disappointed as Gloria's relationship heads in a predictable way with Stan Fremont. I understand that he turns out to actually be of a "class" to be her equal, but so far the rumors of his womanizing have not been dispelled & I wish he would take a long walk off a short pier .This series has been so great in building up relationships a good bit before they are resolved so for me the Gloria/Stan relationship is very sudden & moving WAY too fast. In one breath , it seems that suddenly Gloria & Evan have no chance though it seemed that she was growing to appreciate him & he was proving himself to be a man growing a spine & willing to take any risk for her. There is the big problem: Evan knows Gloria, Stan does not. Evan has made huge sacrifices for Gloria & changed.Stan sees Gloria, decides he wants her & manipulates her. Heck, if the "experienced with women" rumors aren't dispelled,he'd likely have an STD. If Uncouth Alice & all her quirkiness can have a relationship that works with refined Ian dammit why can't we have Gloria end up with someone pure, kind, gentle who appreciates her on all levels & deserves her ? Evan is the total opposite of her father, ( ! ) where as Stan is conniving like her father,is too much flirt & too much a con man to be worthy of her.
To add to all this, the very reason why Gloria married Stan to begin with < it's too dangerous for a woman to go around alone & a disguise just wouldn't work> is completely debunked as it turns out that Joe is a woman masquerading as a man & who has been imprisoned with other men for awhile....so why would pretending to be a man not have also worked for Gloria ?
Finally, why would Evan, who has been so faithful & constant in his affections to Gloria suddenly just get over her & fall for someone else ?
Poor Evan, he was so well written & fleshed out, showing character growth & becoming so endearing only to be pushed aside for selfish & shallow ,albeit dashing, Stan.

Fields of Iron A steampunk adventure novel Magnificent Devices Book 11 edition by Shelley Adina Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
From rags to witches, Gloria Meriweither-Astor continues to try and stop the war conjured up between her greedy father and the Viceroy's ambassador. But how is a lone woman, far from her home friends supposed get to the coast in a country where women traveling alone are subject to abuse, or worse
I have greatly enjoyed this book which focuses mainly on Gloria and Evans' stories, along with the continued adventures of Alice, Ian and the crew of The Swan. All of the books in this series (11 so far!) have been imaginative and realistic with Ms. Adina seeming to have a whole new world in her minds eye and a way of describing it that makes you feel that you are there. Well written, with accurate grammar and spelling (personal pet peeves) and not just a few chapters that hold you up for more money if you want to hear the rest of the story, these books will bring you many hours of reading enjoyment.
Books generally have a beginning, a middle and an end. Even if that end hangs a bit so you're waiting for the next one to come out and that's okay. However, this book was so boring, it took me three months to finish reading it and then there was no ending, it just stopped.
Yeah, Gloria gets to the Viceroy, how many books does that have to take to happen anyway? Evan is reunited with Gloria, to what purpose? They still haven't blown the dam. Alice & a wounded Ian are stuck in the canyons with the witch who shot him. Joe is a woman! There are multiple potential stories woven into this book and none with any substance.
Of course it's easy to predict some outcomes, Gloria will find a way around the Viceroy, stop the war & stay married to Capt Stan. Evan will fall for Joe, once he finds out he is a she. But the unforgivable, to leave a main character from 11 books bleeding in an arroyo with no explanation or way out is the end for me. A hundred sequels can be published and I wouldn't care because this book left me with nothing but regret that I paid money to read it.
What happened to this exciting, unpredictable series?
I am not enjoying this "cut up" and bits and pieces story. I love Ms Adina's stories and have purchased ALL of them. I am starting to feel short changed with this story line that is cut into - who knows how many - pieces. Overall the story is good but it is only ONE story and we are being charged for 3 or 4. If you don't like forced serializations ... Pass and wait for a whole story.
Fields of Iron begins rather slowly for one of the Magnificent Devices books, but this is mostly because all our characters ended up somewhat wrecked at the end of Fields of Air. Gloria was stranded with Las Brujas – the witches who inhabit the canyons of the Rio Sangre de Colorado de Christo – while Evan was a prisoner of war with the Californios.
Not to worry, however. The action picks back up quickly enough. Evan is forced to operate El Gigante – the mechanical behemoth he has managed to pilot all the way from Resolution to build a dam on the river, working with one of his cellmates to run the mechanical monster. As he gets to know his other cellmates during their few off hours, he finds out that one of them is an unfortunate German or Dutchman who has suffered a major loss of memory, and the other is Barnaby Hayes, the man who kidnapped Gloria during their adventure in Venice. They begin to make plans to destroy the dam and escape. And to rescue Alice when they find that the Californios have shot down her airship on their border.
Meanwhile, Gloria, still wishing to stop the war, marries Las Brujas friend, riverboat Captain Stan Fremont as the only way to respectable travel into the Californias, even though it is really Evan that she loves. They are able to meet with the Viceroy. And at the Rancho where they encounter him, they also find Evan and Joe, diverted from their escape and rescue plan to interpret the nightmares the Viceroy has been having. But the Viceroy himself manages to surprise them.
I love this series so I hope I am wrong in my assumptions, but I'm afraid I'm going to be disappointed as Gloria's relationship heads in a predictable way with Stan Fremont.
